New polyurethane film works when exposed to sunlight

How would you like to be able to not have to worry about your car being scratched every again? And even if it did get scratched, that as long as you keep your car sitting in sunlight for at least an hour, that scratch will be gone! With all help from your very own vehicle! This new polyurethane film being developed by scientists from the University of Southern Mississippi has thought of this awesome idea. Marek Urban quoted that "When the polymer is damaged and exposed to sunlight, it is capable of repairing itself, and could be applied to many systems." This new thought of coating is 99.99% polyurethane, which is a material found in hard plastic and soft foams. The remaining 0.01% is either a four-molecule oxetane ring or a long rod of chitosan which is the tough material found in the shells of lobsters. Once a scratched is formed ontop of this product on your vehicle the then broken chitosan rods and oxetane rings drag themselves together and gets rid of the scratch. The heat from the sun allows them to form back together.

I think this idea is really cool! Who wouldn't want this new paint on top of their car, so they wouldn't have to worry about little scratches here and there that happen all the time. You wont have to worry about getting new paint jobs, and the article even said that if you add different pigments you could make that scratch become a new color.
