Facebook Breastfeeding Ban
Breastfeeding ban on facebook website. CNN is covering a breastfeeding ban that has occurred on the popular website called facebook. Facebook makes their money by selling themselves as a way to connect with friends and family far and near. You can share photos and information about yourself and others here. As with any website, you use normal common sense and browse through forums posted by individuals knowing that anyone can say that they are an expert at something without having any credentials at all to back it up.
Now to the battle, facebook vs. breastfeeding women. Mothers have posted photos and videos of themselves breastfeeding their children on this website. Facebook received complaints and has since banned these photos and videos. The mother’s argument is that they are banning educational and informative videos and that are perfectly natural and are far from “dirty” pictures. One of these women has created a facebook group called “Hey facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene.” The LaLeche League supports the mothers stating that they can use these videos as a teaching tool for mother’s learning to breastfeed. Facebook says that baring an entire breast is clearly against their policy and the agreement entered into between the users and the website itself.
My personal opinion is that if you wish to post breastfeeding videos that are tasteful, go for it. There are many new moms’ who could benefits from knowing positioning tricks and techniques that make breastfeeding easier. As a nurse, I can see many benefits that can be gleaned from the information.
