Scientists in Bellevue, Washington, are developing a laser to shoot down mosquitoes based on the Strategic Defense Initiative proposal also known as "Star Wars," according to a report in the Wall Street Journal . The scientists hope to use the laser to help eradicate malaria, which is caused by a parasite spread by mosquito bites. The mosquito laser was devised by Lowell Wood, an astrophysicist who developed the original Strategic Defense Initiative. The project was remade as an anti-mosquito weapon came when Bill Gates asked former Microsoft executive Nathan Myhrvold to look into new initiatives against malaria. Jordan Kare, who worked on SDI and built a mockup of the mosquito laser with parts purchased on eBay, said, "We like to think back then we made some contribution to the ending of the Cold War. Now we're just trying to make a dent in a war that's actually gone on a lot longer and claimed a lot more lives." I think its a very interesting idea and if it works then why not use it.
