    California Octuplets

This is a very interesting story about the birth of octuplets. This is an extremely rare occurrence and is not a natural conception. Amazingly, these eight children are doing quite well in spite of the odds against the successful birth of eight children. Between the eight of them they were 24 pounds ranging in weight from 1 pound 8 ounces to 3 pounds 4 ounces. It required a team of 46 medical professionals and 4 delivery rooms to bring these 2 girls and 6 boys into the world. Doctors are optimistic, but are quick to point out that the babies still in a precarious position due to those problems inherent to multiple births.

The questions here are multiple. What was her motivation for this multiple birth? Why would a doctor implant 8 embryos into a person when the general guideline is that not more than 4 should be implanted? This woman has six children already and no job. Wasn’t there any counseling that took place prior to implanting the embryos? What kind of difficulties are these people sure to have? They live in a three bedroom house. There are three adults (the mother's parents, who are divorced, and herself) and now 14 children. When the babies come home, the grandmother says she will move out, the grandfather is going to Iraq to work as a translator in order to make enough money to feed everyone. There is a high risk for neglect due to the sheer numbers, let alone the stress of having 17 individuals in one home.

I personally fear that there will be great difficulties ahead for these children as well as the parent. I hope that there will be an intervention by the Department of Child Welfare, not to remove the children from the home, but to monitor that there is sufficient access to assistance for the family. I also feel that there need to be laws, not guidelines that govern the number of implanted embryos. There is great risk to the children as well as the mother.

Everyone was excited to hear the news of the octuplets that were born recently in California. The mother didn't want to be exposed or her identity given out but family did report some information that was quite shocking for the world to hear. Ths single mother of 6 children two of which are twins that lived with her parents in a small home with no job. Everyone's thought was what was she thinking. How could she possilby take care of so many children along with herself. The living conditions are not enough to house all these children and everything that goes with newborns. These children are not out of the woods yet, and if God forbid any of them develop a medical condition, how would she care for them. I agree, someone should intervene to make sure they are being well cared for, not take them away or split them up, but to make sure they are okay. One person nor two people are enough to care for all these children. There has got to be something to regulate how many multiples a woman should have, not only for the safety of the mother but it also decreases the chances of birth defects and the quality of life any newborn would have. Taking care of kids in this day and age is expensive, just with the normal everyday necessities and trying to save for college, I can't imagine the added stress of trying to care for 14 and to do it alone.
