This brief article is about President Obama and his view on auto emissions. Last Monday Obama signed a memorandum requiring the Environmental Protection Agency to reconsider an application by California to set its own auto emissions and fuel efficiency standards to go above and beyond federal law. Recently former president Bush rejected this memorandum. WOW! That’s a big surprise considering that the application would reduce our need for oil taking money out of the already greedy pockets of former president Bush. Bush’s response for rejecting this was that another set of rules and standards would just be too confusing and unenforceable. I’m sorry former president, we know how rules can be confusing but we all still follow them. However others may claim that requiring automakers to increase the fuel efficiency in their vehicles would only set them back even further than they already are. Maybe that’s just an excuse, considering foreign automakers have already been doing this, and they are not asking for bailouts. Is it possible that these American automakers just don’t want to take a pay cut? Do they even care about emissions? Or do they just care about maximizing their personal bank account. The republican senator for Ohio quoted, “ The federal government should not be piling on an industry that is already hurting like this.” It is predicted that the economy could not withstand one of the big three form going under. The way I see it is that there just might not be room for three, especially if they do not want make cars that produce fewer emissions as well as require less gasoline.
